About Dr. Bhullar
Dr. Jasjot Bhullar is a highly trained and experienced physician. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Hypertension, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. She is also an IFM Certified Practitioner.
She completed her residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Nephrology in Philadelphia, PA, in 2009 and has been a hypertension specialist since then. She is board certified in all three areas, and her expertise and commitment to her patients have made her one of the leading medical professionals in the field.
In addition to her traditional medical training, Dr. Bhullar is well-versed in the latest developments in functional and mind-body medicine. She received training from the Benson Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2012 and is certified through the Institute of Functional Medicine. This extensive training has allowed her to provide her patients with a whole-person health model, which she uses to manage chronic kidney disease, hypertension, and other conditions.
Dr. Bhullar's approach to medicine emphasizes the importance of evaluating the root cause of a condition to promote overall health and well-being. She is also a certified Trauma Informed Coach, a skill that she incorporates in the mind-body interventions shown to improve the body's processing of trauma. She is constantly learning and seeking new knowledge to provide the best possible care to her patients.
Why Whole Health
My personal experience with drug allergies and intolerance has instilled in me a natural sense of empathy toward those seeking medical care but unable to tolerate many pharmaceuticals. Realizing my knowledge gap in areas such as diet, nutrition, and Mind-Body medicine, I have actively pursued an education in these fields since 2010.
While practicing Nephrology full-time, I have tried to incorporate my learnings into my patient care. However, with a high workload and a traditional approach to medicine, I found it challenging to fully implement a holistic approach.
Excitingly, I am now creating a space that focuses on whole-person health, where we address not only the disease at hand with the best pharmaceuticals, but also preventative interventions that include nutrition, lifestyle, Mind-Body techniques, and nutraceuticals. I believe this multimodal approach will provide a balanced and comprehensive approach to healthcare, and represents the future of medicine.
My Story
I remember most of my childhood being sick from something or the other. I also had several drug allergies. Being born in a family of doctors, I had plenty of attention from all kinds of doctors who were also my parents' friends. My health improved when I found gymnastics, and just having that physical activity led me to eat better. Everything improved in my life, from physical health to academic performance. I just felt like I was a new person.
The medical school drew me in because I was curious, but it also was a huge damper on having a balanced life. Over the years, my health has suffered because I lack adequate sleep and exercise consistently because I did not have a balanced lifestyle.
Even though I spent years learning about how to treat disease, medical training implied health as a lack of disease.
The emphasis in medical education has long been on the latest pharmaceuticals, leaving little room for preventive measures. Even treatment guidelines tend to prioritize pharmaceuticals. However, as someone who cannot tolerate drugs without fear of an allergic reaction, I believe this approach to health and disease management has been imbalanced.
Functional medicine education has given me a new zeal for my work as a doctor and also gives me hope for the future of medicine. I apply this approach to my health and well-being as much as I do for the people who I treat. I want to continue to learn and spread this form of medicine.
